Two overlapping hearts drawn on a beach, symbolising the romance of honeymoons.

Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. You have the whole world at your feet. But where will you go and what will you do?

Having virtually unlimited options can potentially make planning your dream honeymoon a little daunting. But don’t worry, as we’re here to help. Read on to find out about the different types of honeymoons, so you can choose the right fit for you and your partner.

Different types of honeymoons

There’s no such thing as the ‘one perfect honeymoon’. We’re all different, as individuals and as couples. This is why it’s worth exploring the different types of honeymoon holiday available.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeking couple who love adventures, or you simply want to chill out together on a beautiful beach, there’ll be a honeymoon out there to suit you perfectly.

Beach honeymoon

For many couples, there’s nothing better than a luxurious beach honeymoon in a hot, exotic destination. Picture pristine white sands and sparkling turquoise waters, fringed by gently swaying palm trees. You can relax and unwind, with nothing to do but enjoy each other’s company.

Beach honeymoons can be as laid-back as you like, as you top up your tan sunbathing on the sand and sip cocktails at sunset. You can also throw in some activities, trying your hand at snorkelling, diving and perhaps even horseback riding along the beach. You could even include a spa package, treating yourselves to massages and other pampering treatments.

Popular destinations for sun, sea and sand honeymoons include the beautiful Maldives, Mauritius, Fiji and the Seychelles. You could also stay closer to home in the sizzling Algarve in Portugal or the charming Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Adventure honeymoon

Prefer something a little more exciting? Your honeymoon is the perfect time to try something new, and perhaps even something way out of your comfort zone.

Adventure honeymoons can involve activities such as hiking through rainforests and scaling mountains. You might want to go skiing, snowboarding, ziplining, diving, hot air ballooning or nature spotting on a wildlife safari.

The destination you choose will all depend on what you want to do. For example, you might decide to explore hidden beaches in Mexico, go jungle trekking in Costa Rica, try out skiing in Canada or set off on safari in Kenya, Tanzania or South Africa.

Road trip honeymoon

A road trip is the ultimate adventure. With your own car and lots of time, you can go anywhere and do anything. You can plan it out in advance, or simply see where the open road takes you.

Route 66 in the USA is perhaps the most famous road trip honeymoon destination, but there are lots of others. For example, you can explore the Rockies in Canada by road, take the Garden Route in South Africa or stay closer to home and try the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland.

City honeymoon

If there’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, your honeymoon is the perfect time to take the plunge. A city honeymoon is your chance to do a city break in style, seeing and doing everything and anything you fancy.

Cities are great for honeymoons because they have it all. You can take in a show at a theatre, dine at fantastic restaurants, visit museums and galleries, shop up a storm and stay in a luxurious hotel.

There are lots of destinations that fit the bill for a city honeymoon. This includes the likes of New York, Paris, Dubai and Rome. You could even try a multi-centre city tour, for example going to Japan and seeing Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka all in one trip.

Theme park honeymoon

Now for something a little different. If you’re both big kids and love the idea of spending your honeymoon at an incredible theme park, then why not? You could get VIP passes for one of your favourites, or try out somewhere you’ve always wanted to go.

If you need some ideas and inspiration, here are a few of the world’s best theme parks to check out:

  • Universal Islands of Adventure in the US (part of the huge Universal Orlando complex in Florida)
  • Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida
  • Cedar Point, USA
  • PortAventura Park, Spain
  • Universal Studios, Singapore
  • IMG Worlds of Adventure, UAE
  • Ferrari World, UAE (one for Formula One fans).
