New York is famous for its iconic attractions and its ability to bewilder visitors with its mega city vibe and experiences. However, there’s so much more to the city beyond the glamour and the glitz. Here’s where to find the city’s lush, green spaces and breathe under an open sky when in NYC:

The High Line

Built on a historic train track, the High Line in Manhattan’s West Side is a beautiful park, inviting visitors to explore nature and art. You can wander through at a leisurely pace or stop by one of the star attractions including Tiffany & Co. Foundation Overlook, Donald Pels And Wendy Keys Gansevoort Woodland, 14th Street Passage, Diller – Von Furstenberg Sundeck & Water Feature, Chelsea Market Passage and Northern Spur Preserve. There are several art installations throughout the park, created by some of the world’s best contemporary artists. Over 1, 00,000 plants beautify the gardens at the High Line. Additionally, lip smacking food is served by vendors in their food stalls.

Brooklyn Bridge

Linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, the 2.4 mile long walk on the bridge is quite scenic – the East River flowing under the bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan Bridge visible in the distance along with hundreds of boats and helicopters. The bridge is used by hikers and trail runners possessing varying levels of skills and one can see a number of tourists here at any given point of the day. Several drink vendors line up on the bridge, especially during the summer months. At the end of the 30 minute walk, one can stop by any of the several bars and restaurants.

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

The 52-acre Brooklyn Botanical Gardens make for a great place to spend the whole day out, admiring different varieties of plants and lush green vegetation. The park is divided into diverse sections such as Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, Cranford Rose Garden, Native Flora Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Alice Recknagel Ireys Fragrance Garden, Children’s Garden and Water Garden amongst others. There are more than 200 cherry trees here as well. Visitors can take leisurely walks through any/all of these gardens or attend one of the educational programmes aimed at conservation and protection of different plant species. A farmer’s market can be attended in the park on Saturdays.

Yankee Stadium

Make the most of your time in New York by catching up on a baseball game at the iconic Yankee Stadium located in Bronx. The atmosphere during a match is surreal and is reverberating with cheering from fans. Alternatively, you can book a stadium tour of this popular attraction to know about the history of the game and the stadium. In case, you don’t find tickets for a popular match, consider watching it in a nearby bar where the enthusiasm for the game is equally high.

Governors Island

If you visit in the season (May –October), you’ll be able to undertake a whole range of activities on the Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of the New York Harbor. A number of festivals and events are celebrated here with gusto. Families have a grand time walking, picnicking, camping and enjoying an array of other activities. The Governors Island also offers panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty.
