Water sports to try

The sea around Barbados is not just unbelievably beautiful to look at, it’s warm and full of marine life too. If you love sailing, then there are plenty of opportunities, from taking a cruise to hiring a catamaran. If you like being out on the water, then there’s kayaking and canoeing as well as a range of other water sports, such as jet skiing and kitesurfing.

If you enjoy snorkelling or scuba diving then you are in the perfect place to do that too. Divers will relish the clear sparking water, which is home to a wide array of colourful fish and some atmospheric shipwrecks too. Carlisle Bay is popular for shipwreck dives and there’s a yacht club here too.

Other Barbados activities include discovering some of the wilder parts of the island, such as Animal Flower Caves which you’ll find at the island’s northern point. Head down into the caves for dramatic views – just be sure to wear appropriate footwear. The east coast is also renowned for dramatic beauty and Atlantic waves roll in and crash on rugged rocks. The seascape can look spectacular and while you’re investigating, you might find a secluded cove or beach that is perfect for a swim. All Barbados beaches are accessible to the public so if you love sand and sea, you’ll enjoy finding those special places that are off the tourist track.

After all that activity you’ll probably be hungry, so it might be time to sample some delicious fresh seafood at Oistins Fish Fry. This vibrant hangout caters to everyone, so if you want to meet a few locals and get to know the rhythms of Barbados, then this is an excellent spot to spend a Friday evening. There will be music, people playing dominoes and other games and it could be a perfect introduction to Barbados nightlife.

Clubs, pubs and bars

If that has whetted your appetite for Barbados nightlife, then you will want to explore some of the pubs, bars and lounges that come to life when the sun goes down. Barbados is known as one of the best places to party in the Caribbean. St. Lawrence Gap, which you’ll find in the southern part of the island offers restaurants and a lively range of Barbados nightlife options. It also has beach clubs in case you want to get a nightlife vibe going during the day as well. There are rum shacks and nightclubs, just metres away from pristine sand and a coral reef filled with fish.

If you’re looking for more Barbados activities, then you will want to visit the stunning rainforest to be found inland on the island. There are breath taking rainforests about 40 minutes’ drive from Bridgetown, and a hike through this lush greenery could make a fantastic day trip.

If you’re in the mood for some history, then you may want to explore Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. There is British colonial architecture to admire and a wide range of shopping from exclusive boutiques to terrific deals at cruise terminals. The sights include a 17th century garrison and a horse racing track, and the Israel Synagogue also includes a museum telling the story of Jewish life on the island.

After all of that, you will probably need a day off for spa treatments and sipping cocktails on a lounger, watching the sun go down!
