Go crazy at Indonesia’s quirkiest tourist spot that is all about swimming, snorkelling, and clicking underwater photographs with submerged scooter, bicycle, tents, etc. No, it is not a beach destination that we are talking about, but a fresh water pond located in the Central Java province. Umbul Panggok is an Instagram hit where both foreign and local tourists flock to for some super cool selfies and photographs. What makes this pond even more special is its very interesting history.
A bit of History
The story of this natural water pond is equally exciting as the pond itself. Almost 15 years ago, Umbul Panggok used to be a filthy pond filled with moss where villagers used to bath and wash their clothes. The village’s economy was in shambles; as an idea to boost the economy, the pond was then cleaned and transformed into a tourist spot. The plan worked and the village has been prospering ever since.
The entry fee to this pond is equal for locals as well as tourists and costs less than a pound.
About the Pond
Umbul Panggok is a large pool that measures 20 meters x 50 meters, goes as deep as 2.5 meters, and provides enough personal space even during heavy visitor influx. The pool is continuously fed by 40 natural springs, and the water is refreshed at a rate of 800 litres per second. This keeps the pond’s water crystal clear making it suitable for underwater photography.
What to do here
The pond offers a lot of fun filled activities to its visitors. Out of all the activities, the most popular one is to click photos with underwater props installed at the pond’s base. These props include scooter, motorcycle, bicycle, chairs, TV, laptop, camps, and more. If you do not have an underwater camera, you can rent one for an hour which will cost you around 4 Pounds.
For a bit of thrill, you can try the mini water slide. Or, you can enjoy swimming as well as snorkelling. The pond is home to a number of colourful fresh water fishes, and snorkelling among them is a blissful experience. You can rent out swimming and snorkelling gear too for a very nominal price. A number of stalls surround the pond that sell food, drinks clothes, and souvenirs. Public sitting area, changing rooms, and toilets are also available at the facility.
